Vance's account of Stone's River is a readable, one-sitting introduction to an underexamined battle, and the public-domain availability makes it a low-barrier starting point. But the early 20th-century scholarship has been substantially surpassed, the absence of footnotes or bibliography limits its utility, and serious Civil War readers will quickly outgrow it.
