Self-help ✦ Penny’s Take
Style in the Technical and Tectonic Arts, Or, Practical Aesthetics
Gottfried Semper · 2004
80/100
👍 Worth It
For architects, design historians, and aesthetic theorists, the Getty's first complete English translation of Semper's Der Stil is genuinely landmark — this foundational nineteenth-century text on the relationship between craft materials and architectural form was inaccessible in English for over a century. Mallgrave's introductory essay adds scholarly value beyond mere translation. This is a very narrow audience book, but within that audience it is essential.
