Packer writes family grief and failed intimacy with an emotional precision that is hard to find, and the opening novella about teenage Richard and Sasha is widely considered the standout — structurally accomplished and quietly devastating. The shorter stories are more uneven, and the mature content (teen sexuality, child death, drug use) means this is firmly for adult literary fiction readers. For that audience, it is close to essential.
