Turtledove's Gerin the Fox series is light, witty military fantasy with a protagonist who thinks his way through problems — a pleasant change of pace from the grimdark shelf. As an omnibus entry point it's accessible, but this isn't the work Turtledove fans remember him for, and the battle sequences wear out their welcome across the length.
