Tales from Earthsea

This companion collection to Le Guin's Earthsea cycle does two things at once: it expands the mythology with five new stories, and it quietly corrects the gender imbalance of the earlier novels. The Finder traces the origin of Roke's wizardry school; Dragonfly follows a young woman challenging Roke's all-male structure directly. Both are considered among Le Guin's finest shorter fiction. The Locus Award and Endeavour Award recognize what devoted readers already knew: this is literary fantasy at a high level. The caveat is access — without familiarity with the original trilogy, the thematic resonance of these stories is significantly reduced, and the concluding essay that maps Earthsea's history and languages reads as context rather than narrative.
