Series ✦ Penny’s Take
The Black Phalanx

👍 Worth It
Joseph Wilson's 1887 chronicle is a landmark — the most comprehensive account of Black military service across three American wars produced in the nineteenth century, written by a man who served in two of those conflicts himself. The Gilder Lehrman imprimatur and Da Capo reprint confirm its staying power as serious historical scholarship. Nineteenth-century prose demands some patience, but the primary-source testimony is irreplaceable.
