John W. Campbell's linked pulp novellas from 1930 are a genuine artifact of science fiction history — fast-paced, optimistically inventive, and formative for the golden age. But contemporary reviewers called them 'rococo antiques,' and that's fair: the characters are thin, the science is implausible by any modern measure, and the writing shows its age on every page. A rewarding read for SF historians; a tough sell for everyone else.
