For medievalists, Hirsh's textual breadth across devotional and literary traditions is genuinely impressive, and Brill's Studies in the History of Christian Thought series sets a high bar for scholarly credibility. The nine chapters are loosely connected rather than building toward a unified argument, limiting its usefulness as more than an essay collection — and outside the academic specialist, this is simply inaccessible.
