Audre Lorde writing about breast cancer is not the same as anyone else writing about breast cancer — every page insists on naming what society would rather hide, and the prose carries that insistence with a poet's precision. This is a short book that does enormous work, connecting personal illness to feminist politics to the specific weight of being a Black woman refusing to disappear. It's not an easy read and it's not meant to be, but it is a genuinely important one.
