Russia's first great prose novel holds up remarkably well — the pace is clean, the moral stakes are genuine, and Pyotr's struggle to remain honorable while history tears apart everything around him feels timeless. Pushkin accomplished in under 200 pages what most writers cannot do in 500. Translation quality will vary by edition, so it is worth picking a well-regarded one, but the bones of this novel are irreproachable.
