Xcor, convicted of treason and facing execution, has one regret: Layla, the Chosen female who was never his. Layla holds the truth that could spare his life, but using it means risking everything she holds dear. J.R. Ward delivers on years of romantic buildup for series fans, and the emotional vulnerability between these two characters is the novel's genuine strength. The honest caveat cuts two ways: this is Book 15 in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and is completely inaccessible without the prior fourteen, and the conflict resolution in the final act is widely criticized as too abrupt and convenient. More importantly, the series contains explicit sexual content, graphic violence, profanity, and themes including dubious consent and drug abuse — entirely unsuitable for anyone under 18 or for faith-conservative readers. Strictly for adults already invested in the Brotherhood.
