Peter Ackroyd's modern prose retelling of Malory makes the Arthurian legends genuinely readable for contemporary audiences who might bounce off Middle English, and the Sunday Telegraph praised the narrative shaping. The trade-off is real though — the atmospheric music of Malory's prose doesn't survive the translation intact. Families should know that Lancelot and Guinevere's adultery and pervasive battle violence are structural to the story, not incidental; this is a 14-and-up read.
