Forsyth at the peak of his powers — the Cold War machinery is so precisely rendered it reads more like a declassified briefing than a thriller, and the impossible-choice ending is one of the genre's great finales. Dense and demanding in the best way, with a Ukrainian nationalism subplot that turns out to be remarkably prescient decades later. Adult readers who like their geopolitics real will love this.
