Kerouac's most spiritually earnest Beat novel, following his search for meaning through Zen Buddhism and mountain solitude, and there's real warmth under all the wandering. It leans into a Buddhist worldview rather than a Christian one, and AudioFile itself notes some party scenes and gender attitudes feel dated now — both worth knowing going in. Ethan Hawke's narration is genuinely full of life and clearly loves this book.
