Somtow's icy dark-fantasy world of the Ringmaster and snow dragons has real imaginative texture, and the coming-of-age structure is appropriate for the middle-school target. But the critical record for this 1986 paperback is thin enough that it is genuinely difficult to assess how well the execution holds up, and it is out of print and hard to find. The darkness and child-vulnerability themes give some pause for younger readers in the target age group.
