Henry Reeve is a genuinely fascinating historical figure and Clio's fictionalized biography moves fast through Cuba's revolutionary jungle warfare. The weakness is that Reeve himself stays somewhat opaque — reviewers found his inner life underdeveloped — which limits the emotional pull that distinguishes great historical fiction from well-researched adventure.
