👍 Worth It

John Case's 1918 Spanish flu-as-bioweapon thriller has aged better than most of its contemporaries — the science feels grounded, the journalism and Arctic expedition threads are genuinely suspenseful, and Kirkus's praise for its layered reveal structure holds up. The apocalyptic cult villain is a touch melodramatic, but the structural craft is solid. Post-2020 readers will bring extra weight to a pandemic thriller done this well.
