The Freak Observer

Blythe Woolston won the Morris Award for a reason: Loa's grief is rendered in spare, exact prose that never sentimentalizes, and the physics framework — using cosmological concepts like the freak observer to refract a teenager's experience of loss and chaos — is genuinely inventive rather than decorative. This is not a comfortable book and it is not for every reader, but for the right older teen it is the kind of fiction that makes grief feel less like a private failure. The darkness is earned and literary, not gratuitous.
