Doc Smith's golden-age space opera delivers the big-concept galactic scope he was known for — psionic powers, instantaneous star travel, an ambitious galaxy-wide civilization premise — and fans of Lensman-era pulp will find it a breezy read. The problem is the dated 1950s gender dynamics are not subtle: male characters are patronizing toward the women Primes in ways that actively undercut the book's own premise about equal mental power. Thin characterization and a contrived romance round out a book that works best as genre history rather than a current recommendation.
