The Golden Ball and Other Stories

Agatha Christie Β· 1984
82/100
πŸ‘ Worth It

This collection draws fifteen Christie short stories from the decade between 1925 and 1934, ranging from romantic mysteries to darker supernatural territory. Christie in short form is still Christie β€” compact plots, twist endings, the constant possibility that the most obvious reading is wrong. The collection showcases her range: some stories lean cozy, others edge toward the eerie, including 'The Hound of Death,' which involves a nun and quasi-mystical events handled atmospherically rather than theologically. Content is largely clean by any standard β€” crime and mystery without graphic violence or explicit material, some romantic entanglements that touch on infidelity. The honest caveat is that not every story here reaches the quality of her best novel-length work, and as a US reprint anthology from 1971 it did not receive the critical reception of her major titles. For Christie fans wanting to explore her short-story range, it is a worthwhile addition.
