A genuinely ingenious puzzle — a wealthy, poisonous family getting picked off one by one with mysterious footprints in the snow — and it was a massive bestseller in its day for good reason. Philo Vance's pedantic streak and some slow deductive stretches are the tradeoff, but the dread builds beautifully.
