The Judas Field

Bahr's prose is the real thing — honest, artful, and unflinching about what violence does to men and landscapes — and his portrait of Civil War trauma that never fully heals is one of the more memorable entries in that literary tradition. This is a small, deliberate novel that rewards patient readers: a few people, a bleak journey, decades of grief that hasn't loosened its grip. The battlefield violence is visceral and serves the theme, but sensitive readers should know it is not softened.
