Terryl Whitlatch's creature and environment art alone is worth the price of admission — George Lucas wasn't wrong — and the epic quest structure is classic and morally clear in all the right ways. The story of a young lemur banished by corrupt priests and forced to save his island home has real Tolkien-Narnia DNA without being a simple copy. Faith-conscious families should note the animist religious framework and priestly corruption plot before reading with younger children, but for most readers ages 10 and up this is a genuinely beautiful, ambitious book.
