Abdolah's fairy-tale-meets-newspaper-reportage style is genuinely unusual, and the frame of 19th-century Persian court life as a meditation on modern Iran gives the novel real resonance — the Financial Times' Rushdie-meets-Mantel comparison is earned in spirit if not always in execution. Kirkus's sentimentality criticism is fair, though, and the book sits in that frustrating middle zone where the style is accessible but the depth occasionally feels shortchanged.
