Letemendia is writing at a level above most historical fiction — the espionage plotting is tight, the period atmosphere is exceptionally rich, and Beaumont is the kind of morally complicated protagonist the Civil War era deserves. At 608 pages it asks a lot of you, and adult content means it is squarely for grown-up readers, but those who commit will find one of the more rewarding historical novels in recent years.
