Kipling's only novel is a genuinely powerful study of a man losing his sight and his will to live, and the Sudan war journalism scenes crackle with immediacy even now. The portrait of women — Maisie above all — is stubbornly chauvinistic, and the melodrama in the final act has worn less well than the rest. Worth reading for Kipling devotees and Victorian literature readers who can bracket the period gender attitudes.
