The Lord Chandos Letter

Hugo Von Hofmannsthal · 2005
78/100
👍 Worth It

Hofmannsthal's fictional letter is short, dense, and essential — one of the clearest articulations in any language of the modernist crisis of confidence in words themselves, and John Banville's introduction in the NYRB edition is excellent framing. This is not casual reading, and the primary text is brief enough that much of the volume is supplementary material. For readers of European modernism it is indispensable; everyone else should know what they are signing up for.
