Baum's 1904 sequel manages to be both a delightful children's adventure — Jack Pumpkinhead remains one of the most charming figures in the Oz series — and a surprisingly sharp piece of political and gender commentary that still reads as thoughtful a century later. Dorothy-free and more episodic than the original, it is not the place to start with Oz, but for anyone already in the world it is a genuine pleasure. Families may want to talk through Ozma's transformation with younger children.
