Wyndham builds his dread through implication and procedure rather than spectacle, and the moral problem at the novel's center — what do you owe a thing that looks like a child but may not be human? — has lost none of its grip since 1957. The involuntary impregnation premise remains genuinely disturbing, and the ending demands that you sit with uncomfortable questions about survival and conscience. Margaret Atwood called it his masterpiece; she is right.
