The Moon and More

Sarah Dessen Β· 2013
82/100
πŸ‘ Worth It

Sarah Dessen captures the emotional texture of that last summer before everything changes better than almost anyone writing for teens. Emaline's voice is warm and grounded, the coastal setting feels lived-in, and the thread about her absent father backing out of a tuition promise rings painfully true. Dessen handles disappointment and self-definition with real nuance here, and Kirkus called it completely engaging for good reason. That said, parents of younger or more conservative teens should know upfront: Emaline is sexually active with her long-term boyfriend, and underage drinking is treated casually without much consequence. The story also closes on a deliberately open note that not every reader will find satisfying. A strong read for mature teens who can engage it thoughtfully.
