Konigsburg weaves the Holocaust into a Florida estate mystery with her trademark sophistication — the Modigliani thread is genuinely clever, and the moral questions about courage and complicity are handled with real dignity. School Library Journal's enthusiasm rings true. Publishers Weekly's hesitation is also fair: this is not Konigsburg at her absolute peak, but it is still a much richer read than most middle-grade fiction.
