Pérez-Reverte brings formidable art-historical knowledge and moral seriousness to this study of the war photographer's complicity, and the prose has genuine painterly power. But the Kirkus critique lands — extended philosophical dialogue between two men in a tower can feel more like an illustrated essay than a novel, and the emotional detachment that gives it intellectual rigor also keeps readers at arm's length. Worth it for Pérez-Reverte devotees, but a mixed proposition for general literary fiction readers.
