Ken Liu's debut collection is genuinely rare: short fiction that earns the highest genre awards (Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy for the title story alone) while also landing emotionally for readers who don't normally read science fiction. The stories circle around immigrant experience, cultural memory, parent-child love, and what gets lost between generations — themes Liu renders with technical precision and real feeling. The title story about a boy and his mother's magical paper animals is as good as short fiction gets. The honest caveat is that the collection is uneven, as most collections are, and the historically focused pieces work best with some background knowledge of Chinese history. Still, this is a landmark collection.
