The Partner

John Grisham Β· 1998
76/100
πŸ‘ Worth It

John Grisham's 1997 legal thriller opens with a gripping premise: a junior partner discovers a massive fraud scheme, steals $90 million, fakes his own death, and disappears to South America β€” only to be hunted down, tortured, and dragged back to face justice. The plotting is intricate and Grisham's pacing is efficient, with a darkly ironic ending that Kirkus rightly called masterfully bittersweet. The protagonist is morally compromised in interesting ways. That said, this is firmly adult fare: there is a torture scene, an extramarital relationship, and adult themes throughout. Characterization is functional rather than deep, and the romance subplot never quite earns its space. A satisfying thriller for Grisham fans, not a title for younger readers.
