Zindel handles the intergenerational friendship and the redemption arc with genuine emotional honesty, and the mortality themes hit harder because of what happened in the original book. Kirkus's pan as sentimental and cliched is a real mark against it though, and the book simply does not work without familiarity with The Pigman. Read the original first — this sequel is for completionists only.
