Francesca Trivellato does something rare: she traces a single dangerous antisemitic legend about Jews and bill-of-exchange invention across four centuries of financial and legal history with archival rigor that earned reviews in the American Historical Review and the Journal of Economic History. Dense at 424 pages and very much a specialist work, but it earns every page for readers with background in early modern history or the intersection of finance and prejudice.
