The Reckoning: A Novel

John Grisham Β· 2018
πŸŽ™ Narrated by Michael Beck, Random House Audio

Grisham steps out of his usual courtroom-thriller lane for a slower, more literary family saga about a WWII veteran's unexplained act of violence, and it's an ambitious swing even though the deliberately withheld motive left a lot of readers more frustrated than intrigued. There's real atmosphere in the 1940s Mississippi setting, but the pacing drags in stretches. Michael Beck's narration is a genuine asset β€” his range across Southern accents is a treat even where the story itself loses steam.

✦ Penny’s Take β€” this is The Review Group’s own editorial assessment. Penny’s analytical review line researched this book from real sources and scored it across the lenses shown below. It’s an honest first-party read β€” not a page-by-page personal one. The gold βœ“ Penny Tested mark is reserved for books Penny reads cover to cover herself.
⚠ Parent note β€” our reviewers flagged: Murder (pastor shot in church) and wartime POW violence depicted Β· Adultery suspicion drives the plot; mental illness and institutionalization portrayed. We still scored it 63; these are context for your family, not an automatic skip.

πŸŽ™ Narration: good Michael Beck narrates for Random House Audio and handles the novel's slower, descriptive pacing well, convincingly voicing a wide range of Southern accents across gender, race, and age.
