Romans in space fighting alien swarms sounds ridiculous and Meluch makes it genuinely fun — the wit and pacing are the real draw, and Publishers Weekly's praise for 'enough action and suspense for three novels' holds up. It's lighter on character depth than the best military SF, and you do need the prior books, but as genre entertainment it delivers.
