Rafael Sabatini's gift is a protagonist who is genuinely morally complicated — Sir Oliver is not a clean hero and his transformation into Sakr-el-Bahr is not a simple redemption arc. The 16th-century setting is richly drawn, the betrayal-and-revenge engine drives the plot without slackening, and Sabatini earns his place alongside the best swashbuckling historical novelists working in English. The archaic prose asks something of modern readers, but those who meet it halfway are well rewarded.
