French's slow-burn about a retired Chicago cop settling into rural Ireland is atmospheric and morally complex in the best way, trading easy answers for a real meditation on community, loyalty, and justice. There's a killing and some drug-trade grit at its core, but it's handled with restraint rather than shock value. Roger Clark's narration is a standout — his American-Irish-British range was made for this book, so it's absolutely one to listen to.
