The Silver Chair

The fourth Narnia book sends Eustace and new companion Jill Pole on a quest to rescue the missing Prince Rilian, guided by four signs from Aslan and accompanied by Puddleglum — the cautious, doom-predicting Marsh-wiggle who has become one of Lewis's most beloved creations. The journey through Underland and the confrontation with the Lady of the Green Kirtle builds genuine suspense, and the allegorical themes of obedience, faith, and deception are handled with real craft. Aslan functions clearly as a Christ figure; following his signs despite doubt is the novel's spiritual backbone. Death and resurrection are present, handled with care. Mildly scary for very young readers, but thoroughly appropriate for families. A strong entry in the series, with renewed interest thanks to an upcoming screen adaptation.
