The Song Before It Is Sung

Cartwright's 2007 novel draws on the real friendship between philosopher Isaiah Berlin and Adam von Trott, a German aristocrat executed for his role in the 1944 Hitler assassination plot. In the novel, Oxford professor Elya Mendel's papers draw his former student Conrad into an obsessive reconstruction of that pre-war friendship with the doomed resister Axel von Gottberg, while Conrad's own marriage quietly unravels. The historical and philosophical material is genuinely rich — questions of moral courage, complicity, and the gap between ideals and action under totalitarianism are raised honestly and with intellectual weight. The structure, however, is uneven: Kirkus Reviews called it a rare misstep, and the contemporary Conrad storyline is notably less compelling than the historical sections. Adult content is present but not graphic. For readers drawn to morally serious historical fiction with philosophical heft, there is real substance here despite the structural weaknesses.
