Series β¦ Penny’s Take
The Surgeon's Mate
Patrick O'Brian Β· 1994
82/100
π Worth It
O'Brian is at his best when the tension is sustained and the friendship between Aubrey and Maturin is under real pressure, and The Surgeon's Mate delivers both in the Grand Banks escape sequence. The War of 1812 setting gives the series a fresh political backdrop, and Publishers Weekly's praise for 'literate and amusing' storytelling is well-earned. New readers should absolutely start at the beginning of the series β arriving here without context will cost you most of what makes this work.
β¦ Penny’s Take β this is The Review Group’s own editorial assessment. Penny’s analytical review line researched this book from real sources and scored it across the lenses shown below.
