The Tenth Justice

Brad Meltzer drew on his Columbia Law training to give this debut thriller an authentic feel for Supreme Court clerk culture that distinguishes it from the usual legal suspense pack. When newly minted clerk Ben Addison accidentally leaks an impending decision to a blackmailer, he enlists his three roommates — a reporter, a State Department staffer, a Senate aide — to fight back, and their camaraderie gives the book genuine warmth. Critics noted it is remarkably clean for the genre, almost violence-free, with a witty, propulsive pace. The trade-off is plausibility: a few plot mechanics strain credulity, and some of the characters' choices feel more convenient than believable. Still, an impressive debut that delivers on its premise.
