The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds

H. G. Wells · 2021
82/100
👍 Worth It

Pairing these two Wells novels in one volume is a genuinely smart buy — you get two founding texts of science fiction at once, and both hold up remarkably well on their social allegory. The class critique in The Time Machine and the imperialism subtext in War of the Worlds feel anything but dated. The abrupt bacteria ending in War of the Worlds is a real stumble, but it doesn't diminish what surrounds it.

✦ Penny’s Take — this is The Review Group’s own editorial assessment. Penny’s analytical review line researched this book from real sources and scored it across the lenses shown below. It’s an honest first-party read — not a page-by-page personal one. The gold ✓ Penny Tested mark is reserved for books Penny reads cover to cover herself.
⚠ Parent note — our reviewers flagged: moderate violence and mass destruction · fatalistic worldview in Time Machine. We still scored it 82; these are context for your family, not an automatic skip.
