Victor Hugo spent years on Guernsey and poured that windswept, salt-soaked world into this 1866 novel. Gilliatt — social outcast, skilled fisherman, secret admirer of Deruchette — undertakes a physically impossible solo salvage job to win her hand, battling storms, starvation, and a genuinely terrifying giant octopus. Hugo's sea-battle prose achieves moments of sublime intensity, and Gilliatt's final act of self-sacrifice, arranging his beloved's escape and then letting the tide take him, is genuinely moving. The 2002 Modern Library translation is billed as the first complete English edition and is the right place to start. The honest cautions: extended digressions on natural history and local color slow the pace considerably, and Gilliatt's willing self-drowning at the close may trouble faith-sensitive readers. For patient adult readers of 19th-century literary fiction, a neglected Hugo novel well worth the effort.
