Elizabeth Rundle Charles was a genuine scholar and this Victorian survey of hymn history has real erudition behind it — her own translations from Latin and German give it primary-source weight that pure commentary cannot match. But the 2023 reprint adds nothing to the 1858 original, and the Victorian prose will turn away most readers who are not already deep in hymnology. A niche title for a very specific audience.
