Thief of Time

Pratchett at his philosophically richest: Thief of Time wraps genuinely sharp questions about free will, perfection, and what makes us human inside a comic fantasy that includes the History Monks, a glass clock that threatens to stop time, and a version of the Four Horsemen that includes Ronnie, who left before the band got famous. Susan Sto Helit and Lobsang Ludd are among the stronger character pairings in the Death sub-series. Bookbrowse called it clever and engagingly topical, though even fans acknowledge the laugh-per-page ratio runs slightly lower than Pratchett's best comedic work, and the novel rewards those already familiar with Discworld mythology. The satirical treatment of organized religion and the secular humanist framework are worth noting for faith-conservative readers. For older teens and adults, a rewarding and surprisingly moving novel.
