Fitzgerald's debut is messy, technically flawed, and Amory Blaine is often genuinely hard to like — but it captured a generation's voice so precisely that it went through twelve printings in its first year, and as a cultural document of post-WWI American youth it remains vivid and irreplaceable. Read it as the raw, brilliant, uneven thing it is rather than polished later Fitzgerald.
