The McKissacks bring their usual reliability to this early-reader folk-tale retelling, and the controlled vocabulary is well-matched to the 4–7 range. But like their Little Red Hen, this is a competent adaptation of a story children already know, with minimal originality and very limited literary depth. Fine for a classroom library shelf, but not a title to seek out.
